Missoni Obsession

In an ideal world, I would be relaxing on a beach somewhere dressed in Missoni. In reality, I am sitting at a Starbucks in Boston dressed in Forever 21 and H&M. But, back to my point, must I really explain why I love the Italian household name? From the prints to the silhouettes to the overall jet-setting vibe, I love it all. Missoni really encompasses the Dolce Vita lifestyle where you really take pleasure in the art of dressing.

Missoni Spring 2009 collection

The spring collection was all about translation. By this I mean that it was clearly a difficult set of trends to translate into the Missoni style: harem pants, jumpsuits, etc. Angela Missoni did a good job of sticking to their guns, meshing these wild-card trends with timeless Missoni patterns.

Missoni Fall 2009 collection

Missoni Fall 2009 collection

Missoni looked to their Italian roots for fall inspiration.  In this case, it means knits, knits, and more knits. The piled layers sent a message of hippie meets hip-hop. Personally, I know that I would like to wrap up in some of these layers for my long walks in Boston next season! However, I found the collection to be a bit redundant taking the whole concept of a “seamless” collection a little too far. I missed the signature Missoni color palette, but I guess the decision to mute down the shades for fall makes more sense.

Making a statement looks easy with Alexa's necklace.

Summer is the time to bust out the basics. So how do you stay comfortable in these essentials without losing all style points? The addition of the trendy statement necklace is one easy way. Throw on one of these bad boys for the ultimate statement in minimal effort. They are artsy and unique looking and draw attention to your face. What could be better?

Here is a cute and recession-friendly tip: If you don’t feel like spending cash on a statement necklace, try putting two or three of your necklaces together, uniting them by a quality such as texture, color, or metal.

She Was A Working Girl North Of England Way

The motion picture bible of dressing stylishly for work.

The motion picture bible of dressing stylishly for work.

I’m sure I’m not the only one this summer who has work and money on the brain. Fortunately I am on the overworked rather than underworked spectrum for once, as a result of a few flukes. Therefore, I have spent more time than ever on the clock this past month.  These commitments have created many new decisions about what to wear and how to stay comfortable yet stylish yet appropriate yet not liable to slip on the wooden floor in front of a full office or restaurant. However, summer is a time when I like to dress the way I like to dress, with floaty skirts and easy dresses and comfy sandals. So I have been posed with the dilemma of how to balance work-friendly attire with my preferably more breezy style.

One way to look professional without completely stifling your personal identity is through accessories. On top of your work pants and button down, add a bold necklace or earrings that you would wear out on the town. As for the clothing itself, black pants and varying pencil skirts are pretty much what I have been relying on for bottoms. It’s obviously more about the top to get creative with. Patterns, shapes, textures, are all ways to vary it up. Just stay appropriate with nothing revealing or overly/bizarrely trendy (cut-outs might not be the trend you want to dabble with for work).

These outfits scream,”I am actually a cool person when not 9 to 5ing!” Start channeling Devil Wears Prada stat! And get me a cup of coffee while you’re at it!
