B Is For Beach House

[source]

If you like: The Zombies, Grizzly Bear

Then let me introduce: Beach House

When it comes to music, sometimes bigger is better. Giving you the ability to get lost in sound, big music is far from the grounding nature of say an acoustic ballad or top 40 anthem music. In a genre that could only be called dream pop, Beach House’s sound combines the slow, atmospheric rhythms and haunting lyrics of French-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally. (Legrand has also lent her Nico-esque voice to Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” and “Slow Life.”) Each of their three albums delivers echoing music that floats right over your head in the best sense possible. Try to stay grounded, I dare you.

TREND: TRILBIES AND FEDORAS

I hereby am determined to become a hat person. True, I have less need for going incognito then say…any of the ladies below. Yet somehow I do always find myself wishing to avoid gussying up for city strolls. For this reason shades have become essential and what better way to reinforce the undercover look then by adding a trilby or other hat?

Since trilbies and especially fedoras took a much-needed and rather long break from being in style, a comeback was definitely in order. And pulling one off is easier than it sounds.

  • Keep competing accessories to a minimum.
  • Add long necklaces instead of earrings.

This look is very “borrowed-from-the-boys” so the key is to either a) combine it with feminine proportions–dresses, mini skirts, and drapey tops or b) take the full-fledged menswear route–trousers and structure.

  • Stick to neutrals or one pattern only to avoid seeming overdone.
  • Choose the hat as your outfit statement piece, without tackling other trends.

I Don’t Recall a Single Care, Just Greenery and Humid Air

[source]

I’ve been a bit sporadic recently due to working up a storm. However in the time I’ve been away, my hair has been bearing a bit of a resemblance to the shots above. The humidity here in Boston has been unstoppable.

So I ask, what’s everyone’s weatherproofing secret?
