An Education: An Intellectual Review

The story of young innocuous girl being charmed and seduced by a smooth-talking older man is not a new one. This time the scene is a1961 London suburb, the innocent girl is a smart schoolgirl named Jenny (Carey Mulligan) and the smooth-talker is a thirty-five-year-old man named David (Peter Sarsgaard). She has dreams of Oxford, he went to what he refers to as the “University of Life.” When their paths cross, the plot takes a natural path with the culture-starved Jenny falling into the fast-paced, hedonistic lifestyle of David and his friends. This was a time when men were men and women went to college merely as a back-up plan to finding a husband. Though her parents are overbearing and restrictive on every other part of her life, they do everything but offer Jenny up with a dowry to the dashing David.

Written by Nick Hornby (About A Boy, High Fidelity) the movie is a study in dialogue, expressions, and body language. Both Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan fit their roles flawlessly, but in reality there is only Carey. Without the perfect Jenny, the entire piece would have fallen apart. The fresh-faced newcomer Mulligan personifies this character so completely that is is easy to forget she isn’t actually a young suburban deviant.

The film is an aesthetically pleasing one with a beautiful weekend jaunt to Paris full of sweeping cinematography of the city. The period piece wardrobe designed by Odile Dicks-Mireaux created the  elegance of the sixties with lovely enchantment. From the shift dresses to the sunglasses and updos, Jenny and David’s sophisticated friend Helen (Rosamund Pike) are like Mad Men across the pond.

An Education really does exemplify the coming-of-age tale. Differentiating between the education one can gain in school and the cultural education that music, film, and traveling can provide, the message rings clear with me that only with the combination of these two educations is life worth living.

With A Crown On My Head And My Denim Shirt

[source]

I’ve been on the market for a chambray shirt and/or dress for quite some time now. The item keeps popping up on many fashionable ladies. Alexa Chung, in particular, has worn the trend on several occasions, even pairing it with jeans for a blue-on-blue look.  Though I am not sure I could pull off this double dose of denim, the shirt trend alone is easy to pair with other basics as shown in the blue jean baby street style below.

1. ALEXA CHUNG tones down a bright blue American classic with all black and white. Do I spy an Animal House tee?

2. BLAKE LIVELY in a classic shirtdress shape with a denim twist.

3. JENNIFER GARNER pulls of chambray with a bunch of basics.

4. KATE BOSWORTH is summery and on-trend.

5. SIENNA MILLER wears her denim shirt as outerwear.

6. ALEXA CHUNG seems to be the ultimate trend fan. This time in a cute denim shift.

7. KATE BOSWORTH goes for shades of gray for her chambray.

8. VANESSA HUDGENS is Native American-inspired with fringe and turquoise.

Last weekend was really quite a weather tease. The unseasonably early sixty degree weather gave a brief reprieve from winter and now I cannot wait for a change of season and wardrobe. It is about time to say goodbye to the sturdy boots I have worn everyday for the past four months of winter trekking. The minute I see some pink flowers outside, that’s it: no more boots.

The O.C. Made Me Love Music

The O.C. made music its own character. Rooney, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie, and more made appearances in different episodes. Other bands premiered their singles on the music-intensive show such as Coldplay, Imogen Heap, and The Shins. More than any other show of the time, indie music was in the foreground.

For all of this emphasis on strategic soundtracking, I have the show to thank for my own passion for music. Around peak O.C. popularity time, I bought the Music From The O.C.: Mix 1 CD admittedly  for the pictures, especially since I didn’t know a single one of the bands on the album. After obviously plastering the album artwork all over my room, I realized I actually liked what I heard. After getting familiar with the tracks themselves, I explored other songs by these indie artists. After dabbling in all of the discographies of featured bands like Joseph Arthur, Spoon, Jem, and The Dandy Warhols, I became obsessed with the “Just For You” iTunes application (the predecessor to Genius). Soon enough, my mom would have to force me to come out of my room after spending hours upon hours downloading and sampling and perusing music. It started to and still does give me a thrill to know a band first and to spread its awesomeness to others. I’m active believer that my obsession with music has helped me make friends I may have never bonded as much with. It has given me exhilarating concert experiences…from sneaking under the fence of an outdoor sold-out festival to being pulled onstage with my best friend during the last song of a Rogue Wave show. Tangent aside, that first O.C. mixed tape had me hooked and I haven’t looked back since.
