Not Much Heart To Fight Black Coffee

Really cute coffee cups

Coffee is good great for you.

According to just about everyone…

The average cup of coffee has hundreds of different chemical compounds. Maybe that’s why news reports about coffee vacillate between lauding its health benefits and labeling it harmful. Still, the benefits of coffee seem to outweigh the negatives. To name just a few: Some Arizona researchers recently discovered that caffeinated coffee helps improve memory in older adults. A new study from the United Kingdom suggests that small amounts of coffee consumed throughout the day can increase alertness and improve performance on all kinds of tasks, including those that require hand-to-eye coordination and attention to detail. Preliminary studies suggest regular coffee drinking may lower risk of type 2 diabetes.”

“After 30 years of research, it’s been proven that caffeine before a workout can make you faster and improve your athletic performance. Between one to five milligrams of caffeine per kilo of body weight can help to improve your performance by up to five percent. However, nine mg of caffeine per kilo can actually decrease your performance, so don’t go overboard.  Recent research shows significant evidence that caffeine before exercise results in reduced soreness.”

That’s it, I’m heading to Dunkin’ Donuts.

Not Just A Pretty Face

Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims

Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims

STYLE ICON: MOLLY SIMS

This All-American lovely has some consistently impressive fashion sense. I had to be highly selective in which outfits I used, because quite frankly I couldn’t find many that I disliked! To boot, the girl is a supporter of “Friends of El Faro,” a grassroots non-profit that helps raise money for Casa Hogar Sion, an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. She’s hosted the organization’s last two fundraisers and visits the orphanage regularly. That’s endearing.

Tell Me Why Should We Live Between Joy And Blues

Joy Bryant natural

STYLE ICON: JOY BRYANT

Five Reasons Why Joy Bryant is a Style Icon.

  1. Her casual style not only looks appropriate but makes her special ensembles that much more special.
  2. She’s interested in crafting a line of eco-friendly luggage and travel accessories in the near future.
  3. She’s print-happy but always makes sure nothing looks overdone by balancing with khaki or basics.
  4. She’s an Oxfam America Sisters on the Planet Ambassador and spoke on Earth Day in Washington about the impacts climate change has on the poor.
  5. She’s pretty much Missoni’s unofficial posterchild.

She Was Practiced At The Art Of Deception

Marianne Faitfull edgy style

STYLE ICON: MARIANNE FAITHFULL

Marianne Faithfull started out as the It girl of London’s swinging 60s scene. She had a budding music career, a love affair with Mick Jagger, and a sense of style all her own. Like many groupies, Marianne Faithfull is more notorious for her beauty and her long romance with Mick Jagger than for her singing. She even launched into acting and was actually the first person in any movie to say the F-word onscreen (in I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname).  But when the sixties came to a close, so did Marianne’s reign as rock royalty. By the time she and Mick broke up in the ‘70s she was consumed by her drug addictions.  Supposedly, “Wild Horses” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” were written about Marianne and Mick’s break-up. Through her troubled times, Faithfull had several jaded comebacks in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Marianne’s interesting style perfectly captured the fashion whirlwind of the late sixties. Her love affair with Mick often appeared in their fashion choices, as they often showed up wearing similar quirky ensembles. All of her ensembles had that same disheveled look that Kate Moss brings to modern fashion. You could always read between the lives of Marianne’s outfits to see that she was most concerned with how much fun she could have wearing it. Hungover mornings aren’t conducive to impeccable perfection so her look was always ever so slightly random and tousled. Maybe she just grabbed whatever was on the floor, be it hers of Mick’s and rocked it with her glamorous confidence.

Her go-to getups included: wearing tights as outerwear, babydoll dresses, knee socks, wide brimmed hats, dark eye makeup, blunt bangs, shaggy furs, black skinny pants, over the knee boots, and tight leather.

She had such an aura about her, so luxe but so nonchalant.

Ideas for Summer on Little Money

Kate Hudson picnic[source]

  1. Host a potluck dinner at your house:  Go to the grocery store with your friends. Make everyone pitch in some money buy all the necessities for the desired meal. To create some restaurant ambience, light some candles and make some cocktails and Sangria.
  2. Have a board game night. Stop rolling your eyes. Apples to Apples, Cranium, Balderdash, Taboo: these games are EXCELLENT timewasters. If this still bores you, try a rousing game of tipsy Apples to Apples. It really does the trick. One weekend morning I woke up with a stack of Apples to Apples playing cards in my clutch, which still remains a mystery.
  3. Spend a day taking pictures. The longer you spend, the artsier they will get. And if and when they are still relatively unimpressive…Picnik them on Facebook! Then make photo collages to hang up on your bleak dorm room walls this fall.
  4. Go shopping! Counterintive, yes, but how about a thrift store?! I have been shopping at Goodwill and Salvation Army a lot this summer. If you really set your mind to it at these stores, you can come out with some gems.
  5. Redbox! It costs less than a coffee!
  6. Pack a picnic and go to the park. Bring a Frisbee and a kickball for the guy friends. Eat your meal together then laze around in the sun. Sounds lovely to me!
  7. Tie-dye. Enough said.
  8. In the mood to cozy up with a shiny new magazine? Step away from the drugstore aisle and hunker down at the good old library. Read your magazines there and treat yourself to an Arnold Palmer.
  9. Take a long, long, long walk. Preferably take this walk around Boston. Always kills my boredom! People-watching is one of the only sports I’ve mastered.
  10. Watch a sunrise or sunset from beginning to end.
