STYLE ICON: MARIANNE FAITHFULL
Marianne Faithfull started out as the It girl of London’s swinging 60s scene. She had a budding music career, a love affair with Mick Jagger, and a sense of style all her own. Like many groupies, Marianne Faithfull is more notorious for her beauty and her long romance with Mick Jagger than for her singing. She even launched into acting and was actually the first person in any movie to say the F-word onscreen (in I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname). But when the sixties came to a close, so did Marianne’s reign as rock royalty. By the time she and Mick broke up in the ‘70s she was consumed by her drug addictions. Supposedly, “Wild Horses” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” were written about Marianne and Mick’s break-up. Through her troubled times, Faithfull had several jaded comebacks in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Marianne’s interesting style perfectly captured the fashion whirlwind of the late sixties. Her love affair with Mick often appeared in their fashion choices, as they often showed up wearing similar quirky ensembles. All of her ensembles had that same disheveled look that Kate Moss brings to modern fashion. You could always read between the lives of Marianne’s outfits to see that she was most concerned with how much fun she could have wearing it. Hungover mornings aren’t conducive to impeccable perfection so her look was always ever so slightly random and tousled. Maybe she just grabbed whatever was on the floor, be it hers of Mick’s and rocked it with her glamorous confidence.
Her go-to getups included: wearing tights as outerwear, babydoll dresses, knee socks, wide brimmed hats, dark eye makeup, blunt bangs, shaggy furs, black skinny pants, over the knee boots, and tight leather.
She had such an aura about her, so luxe but so nonchalant.
Peace,
