There are Just Some Things Sex Shouldn’t Sell

Ah the intricacies of advertising. They really went there, which has me talking about it because it’s so outrageous. I mean how often are people talking about organ donation? They’re not. So maybe this was in fact a clever way of sparking a little controversy to get a rarely spoken about cause its own 15 minutes. For a cause like that, hey, sometimes the ends justify the means. But if you really stop and think about it, you will realize that this is wrong on so many levels. The ends could be reached using a much less sexist message!

However, this isn’t even subtle innuendo like the kind that you now realize was in EVERY movie you saw as a kid when you were too cutely innocent to ever pick up on. NOPE there’s no way around this one and that is simply a lazy ad. Why is the audience straight males? This is downright bizarre…

How sad is is that they had to debase something as optimistic and altruistic as organ donation? This leaves me with such a feeling of disgust.

PETA is on the same train of though as these guys with their campaign for “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.” Sure, I love the cause…but what happened to the campaigns of cute little animals. Why must they exploit the female body for the purposes of getting across a product/message? It is almost as if they think that the fact that they have well-intentioned messages gives them the green light for using a controversial advertisement. And this, my friends, is one of many of the flaws in mass marketing.

Musings On A Cultural Icon

The passing of Michael Jackson saddens me for a reason different than most other people. No, he wasn’t the soundtrack to my childhood. No, I wasn’t alive when learning the “Thriller” dance was the cool thing to do. But, I am bearing witness, like everyone else this week, to the death of one of the last HUGE household names. I can only think of a handful of stars whose entertainment careers have spanned over several generations, propelling them to superstar statuses: Madonna, Cher, Bono, Bruce, etc.

In this day and age, culture is too fragmented to create these larger than life rockstar personas. When we have our own iPods, Twitters, DVRs, and cell phones, it is no longer as united a front in which to create a mass media. You don’t have to pay attention to the same entertainment as everyone else. The whole country doesn’t flock to the theater to see the same movie as much as in the past. I think I actually might prefer those days in some ways. Maybe I don’t want entertainment to individually always cater to my own interests. It isolates everyone into to their own personal bubble. As if we need that in today’s already divided and unsocial world!

Ten minutes after hearing the MJ news, my coworkers and I were carpooling over the Tobin Bridge into Boston. We had “Billie Jean” blaring on the radio and all of the windows down. Three of the tollbooth workers came out of their booths and slow-clapped and smiled as we drove through Fast-Pass style. I recall a really weird feeling after seeing this occur: a feeling of cultural unity that is RARE in this country. Call me crazy, but Michael is the Elvis of this generation, and it beats me as to who can fill those shoes out of today’s artists.

Rachel Bilson is a princess. Worshiped for her sense of style, she has not even done enough in her career to get all the coverage she receives. She is pretty much solely a style icon! Consistently perfect, her ensembles never fail to inspire. Her style is easy to adapt to your own identity since she relies on the manipulation of basics. It is never flashy or too out there, which is saying something due to the fact that she tries some pretty risky trends. She always tones these trends down to a level where they become street-chic appropriate. And she provides us with endless examples! The girl has seemingly taken it upon herself to be the queen of street-style. She is always photographed out and about in her fashionable outfits. Quite frankly, she doesn’t appear to be doing much else than parading around LA looking cute. At least she is doing a good job of that!
