STYLE ICON: CARRIE BRADSHAW
Ah, Sex and the City: the show that defined our generation’s females, as many people claim. Although, I think it is a little unjustified to go that far, the extent of the show’s influence is impressive. What people see in the world around them (the media included), is what they accept as the cultural norm. So perhaps the sexual looseness on the show is what inspired the modern day changes in relationship dynamics (friends with benefits, etc., etc.) All of these theories are still just speculation, but it can be said for sure that the one domain the series irrefutably impacted was fashion. From the shoes to the costume changes to the designer references, it was as much about the sex as it was the clothes, Carrie’s clothes.
It is extremely hard to try to define Carrie Bradshaw’s style as anything more specific than “fashion” in general. And it wasn’t always even “fashionable” either, it was just fashion, pure fashion. In my opinion, her messy, unkempt hair was a big part of the appeal of Carrie’s style. With flat-ironed, shiny hair I think some of the novelty would have been lost. Her outfits would have looked like some up-scale fashionista who was trying too hard 24/7. With her hair and her “Carrie-free” attitude, she just came off as a girl who lives and breathes fashion. The wacky clothing came alive when she put them on and even the strangest of choices seemed reasonable and logical whenever she was the one donning them.
So in homage to one of my favorite shows of all-time, my favorite Carrie Bradshaw looks…
Peace,
