Drive To The Country, I’ll Wear My Summer Dress

I’ve been on the market for a maxi dress for some time now. Not just any maxi, though; it needs to be perfect. Ask me to describe it and I have no idea what I’m looking for. What I do know is that these dresses are uber-comfortable (Believe me…I’ve tried on about twenty). They are the quintessential summer bohemian staples: minimal effort with a big impact. Just add some metallic sandals, layered necklaces, some bracelets, etc. The flowing simplicity of the dress deems excessive accessorizing necessary. The following celebrities got the look completely right.

The Window Wide and the Rain in Her Braided Hair

The boho braid has been around for a while now.  What’s perfect about this style is that it looks equally as good paired with messy, undone hair as with styled hair.  Dating back to the Sienna Miller/Mary-Kate Olsen bohemian surge of 2005, the boho braid is definitely lasting another season. I don’t know about you guys, but I know I’ve certainly added a braid or two here or there just for the sake of it and somehow feel much better about my ensemble!

She’ll Be Saving The World In Between Fashion Plates

Happy Earth Day everyone! To honor this environmental day I’ve decided to feature one particular actress who is truly making an eco-impact in the world. Natalie Portman is one of those celebrities who everybody seems to love. Whoever says, “Oh, that Natalie Portman with her Harvard degree, intelligent movie choices, and Veganism…yeah she doesn’t seem that cool”? The girl has it all and doesn’t appear to want to be in the spotlight all the time, which is incredibly admirable in the days of Perez Hilton and the tabloid frenzy. A vegetarian her whole life, Natalie also refuses to wear fur, feathers, or leather. She went above and beyond–like usual–(think shaven head for a movie role?!) by launching her own brand of vegan footwear with Té Casan. The world has taken notice, causing her to be named an ambassador to the relief program FINCA. There are a handful of other actresses who are stepping up their environmental and political game, too, such as Alicia Silverstone, yet what really makes me fall in love with Natalie’s career is her varied taste in movies. She appeals to the guys, to the girls, to the nerds, and to people with indie taste. She stars in three of my all time favorites: Closer, Garden State, and Black Swan. That scene in Closer on the crowded sidewalk had me listening to Damien Rice’s “The Blower’s Daughter” every time I walked around in public. To get back on track, Natalie even dresses as amazing as she acts. Though she sticks to a decidedly more ‘20s vibe with frocks and beaded headbands, she often rocks laidback and decidedly bohemian ensembles. She’s an icon for not only her style, but also for the positive way that she uses her fame.

Are you inspired by Natalie’s style?

Tie-Dye On The Highway, See The Garlands In Your Hair

It was cool in the ‘70s. It was cool in fifth grade. It is and always will be cool at any Phish or Dave Matthews Band concert. Tie-dye is back and is literally in fashion this spring. Blending seamlessly into the carefree fashion that we all try to channel, tie-dye is making its way onto shelves and into the closets of celebrity fashionistas. Pair tie-dye dresses and tops with strappy wedges or woven sandals. Add even more of a boho feel with excessive gold jewelry.  Seen on the runways and on the sidewalks, this technique of dying hasn’t died yet!

The Blonde One Was Called Freedom

I became enamored of Kate after seeing Almost Famous. Naturally, after watching Penny Lane’s nonchalance radiate from the screen, I was obsessed. She was so carefree, so sparkly. Real-life Kate doesn’t stray too far from the character she played onscreen. A self-proclaimed free spirit, she definitely has that hippie-chick meets rock-chick vibe down pat (with the help of her ever-present smile). And it doesn’t hurt that her figure can pretty much pull off anything due to her love of running, yoga, and Pilates.  On the street, she wears flowy dresses and skirts that match her laidback attitude. On the red carpet, she steps it up a notch by working in metallic accents for just the right amount of edge. Now if only Kate would just step away from the pile of romantic comedy scripts and bring back the sparkle of roles like Penny Lane. Her next two projects (Big Eyes and Nine) do not include Matthew Mcconaughey, weddings, or love ferns, so we’ll see what happens! Of course, I cannot leave out the fact that her iTunes celebrity playlist introduced me to one of my all-time favorite bands, Bon Iver. Kate’s a non-fiction Band-aid and has been spotted at music festivals, listing Arcade Fire and Coldplay as some of her favorites. When not at concerts, she is an activist in community service and has even developed an organic hair-care line with her hairstylist. I doubt I’m the only one to say that she is an all-around inspiration. From Kate’s perfect hair and relaxed style to her great taste in music and overall mantra, she’s become the quintessential modern bohemian icon.

Are you inspired by Kate’s style?
